What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a condition that causes patients to become off balance, tired, and experience limited functionality for anywhere from a few minutes or hours, to as long as days at a time. It can be caused by the temporomandibular joints that connect the bottom jaw (mandible) to the upper jaw (maxilla) having been overworked and filled with tension, leading to additional pressure on the inner ear.
Within the inner ear is an intricate system that responds to both where your body is in space with respect to gravity, as well as movements in your external environment. They then communicate this information to the brain. Vertigo occurs when the additional pressure on the inner ear caused by TMJ disorder or jaw strain leads to your brain registering that you or your environment is actually moving when it’s not. Ultimately, this causes a disconnect between all of these interacting parts of your body and can result in nausea, difficulty balancing, and a sensation of your head spinning.
How We Treat Vertigo

Step 1: Your neuromuscular dentist in Owasso will gather a detailed history of your symptoms and what types of dental treatments you’ve had in the past. If you’re being referred to our office by a physician, we will go through your medical history and records beforehand.
Step 2: Our team will take a cone beam CT scan of your facial structure that will allow us to examine your face, airway, and posture, as well as your temporomandibular joints (jaw joints).
Step 3: We will then use our K7x EMJ evaluation system to measure and record the function of your lower jaw and the muscles surrounding your jaw joints.
Step 4: Finally, our team will use all of this information to figure out and address issues related to jaw misalignment that could be affecting your balance and your brain’s perception of your body in space.
